What is constipation?
Constipation is having irregular and infrequent bowel movement or having a difficulty to have bowel movement. Unlike the popular belief, not having a bowel movement every day does not mean having constipation. A description of the stool helps understand whether or not a person is suffering from constipation – dry, hard, small lumps of stool are considered one of the signs of constipation.
What causes constipation?
Diet, not enough liquids, certain illnesses, certain medications, lack of exercise, pregnancy, and abusing laxatives.
What kinds of constipation cures are there?
Generally speaking, there are 2 groups of constipation cures: The homemade constipation cures and the medicinal constipation cures. When experiencing constipation, it is always recommended to first try the natural or homemade constipation cures, before turning to Over the Counter and prescribed constipation medicine.
Usually, the first advice regarding constipation cures is this: A change of diet – eating more raw vegetables, fruit, drinking lots of liquids – preferably warm water, herbal tea and fruit juice such as prunes and oranges, accompanied by daily exercise: walking, swimming, or aerobic workout, and by setting aside time to relax and have bowel movement. If there is no obvious cause for the constipation, such as medications, illnesses or pregnancy, this often relieves that constipation and is considered one of the best constipation cures there are – since it’s basically living a healthier life.
When that doesn’t work, the next step is usually trying different OTC constipation cures, such as bulk forming laxatives, stimulant laxatives and enemas, which have different possible side effects and some of which are harmful when used for longer than a couple of days. The more adventurous types turn to different kinds of alternative medicine, such as Shiatsu, Acupressure and Ayurveda (India’s traditional medicine) treatments. These methods are based on movement and touch to relieve constipation and for some people they are the most effective constipation cures out there. Their main disadvantage is their high cost.
When nothing else works, the final step is turning to prescribed medicinal constipation cures such as Lactulose or Lubiprostone and possibly even medical invasive procedures, for immediate constipation relief. Usually, medical procedures are required when the stool has hardened to a degree that medication cannot soften it and independent stool passing is impossible. These constipation cures are used as a last resort since the list of their possible side effects is long and extremely undesired.
